The HP TX2000 is unique in entertainment touch screen laptops in that it is the only touch screen laptop to have a digitizer display. Its distinction from the previous TX1000 model is a handful of system updates and improved functionality in full tablet mode.
Starting at around ,700 this laptop physically resembles the previous model except for minor aesthetic improvements such as a more consistent body color and direction arrows at the hinge of the swivel screen.
Laptop With Tablet Screen
The speakers remain on the hinge which is a big design plus when using the laptop for viewing media. Standard laptop speakers point at the wrong direction most of the time but with the HP Touch Smart, turn the laptop into tablet mode and the speakers rotate with the screen so it faces the user.
The keyboard provides the same sleek and smooth tactile feedback with the only detriment being the noise which eventually wears with use. The touch pad below the keyboard is unique from most in its use of an inverted bump design and a separate scroll bar on the right.
As with all new laptops today, this one comes with standard wireless support of a/g/b WIFI as well as Bluetooth. It also comes with a 5-in-1 card reader which is very convenient to have in this age of high tech media, as well as three USB 2.0 ports which seems like a standard design with most HP branded laptop computers and S-video.
The 12.1 inch wide screen has a native resolution of 1280x800, which is comparable for such a small display. Clarity is only fair and off-angle viewing is well below average but shows improvement in brightness over the previous model. And while the ultra glossy screen looks nice, it is very reflective and not recommended for use outdoors or in very bright environments.
The TX2000 weighs in at just 4.26 pounds which sounds good for any laptop but that is more than most 12.1 inch laptops anywhere else. Most models will come with 2 gigabytes of RAM but a 4 gigabyte version is also available. For being an entertainment centric machine, the overall operating speed is only average and graphics is below average.
One of the pros in HP designs is the fan location underneath the base of the laptop which does a good job of mitigating noise during operation. Heat becomes an issue when the touch screen laptop is in full tablet form because the fan then blows the hot air directly onto the user's leg.
Over the past few years we have seen some thoughtful designs brought to the market and this laptop is especially unique by being entertainment focused. The dual node displays and impressive battery life are a pleasant surprise for a laptop of this price to feature ratio. The biggest downer for being a touch screen laptop is that the on screen digitizer is not exceptionally accurate.
