The LCD screen is the window to the computer. In a lot of ways the The choice of a screen is a big factor in determining what kind of laptop you are going to get.
There are many different sizes of LCD screens that you can get with a given laptop. Say for example you wanted to buy a Dell D610. I am using this example because it is a older model that many people are familiar with. A D610 screen is 14.1", and that is the only size screen you can get with the D610 because of the physical size of the laptop. So if you are set on a 15.1" screen you would not be able to get a D610 because it is not made. In this case you would have to go to a different laptop all together.

You do however have a choice in the resolution of the LCD screen. Resolution is the number of pixels available to the screen expressed in terms of the number of pixels on the horizontal axis and the number on the vertical axis. I think that the choice of resolution is in a lot of ways more important than screen size. Quick note here, if you have a very high resolution on a small screen the objects on the screen will be very small. Likewise a low resolution on a very large screen will make the objects appear much larger.
The D610 that I was talking about earlier with the 14.1" LCD screen comes in two resolutions. The first resolution is a XGA (Extended Graphics Array) or 1024 x 768 resolution. The other option is the SXGA+ (Super Extended Graphics Array Plus) or 1400 x 1050 resolution. I personally prefer the SXGA+ screen because you are able to view more of web pages on the screen without scrolling, however the characters are much smaller and could be a problem for some people to read. Some laptop manufacturers give you a choice in screen resolutions so be sure to look into the different options available before purchase.
In the example that we are working with you can see that there is a descriptive group of letters (XGA) and (SXGA+). This is another way of representing screen resolutions. The following table breaks down some common representations.
If you want to find your computers resolution the LCD resolution can be matched by going to Start->Control Panel->Display Properties
XGA Display property should show 1024 x 768
WXGA Display property should show 1366 x 768
WXGA+ Display property should show 1440 x 900
WXGA++ Display property should show 1600 x 900
SXGA Display property should show 1280 x 1024
SXGA+ Display property should show 1400 x 1050
WSXGA Display property should show 1280 x 854
WSXGA+ Display property should show 1680 x 1050
UXGA Display property should show 1600 x 1200
WUXGA Display property should show 1920 x 1200
For Windows Vista: Right-Click on Desktop -> Graphics Properties
So which resolution should you choose? I have found that it is a personal preference for most people. I have worked with many different laptops and found that the minimum resolution one should have is the XGA or 1024 x 768. For the most part most web pages fit nicely in this resolution without much side to side scrolling. Every once in a while you will find a site that requires you to scroll from side to side, but not often. My favorite screen resolution is WSXGA 1280 x 854 on a 14.1" screen. Look at as many resolutions as possible and find the best one for you.
